How We Keep Children Safe – Understanding the Prevent Duty

At Little Treasures Day Nursery , your child’s safety and wellbeing are our top priorities. As part of our safeguarding responsibilities, we follow the government’s Prevent Duty, which helps protect children from the risk of radicalisation and extremism.

What is the Prevent Duty?

The Prevent Duty is part of the UK government’s strategy to stop people from becoming involved in terrorism. For nurseries and early years settings, this means we must:

  • ✅ Promote positive values such as tolerance, respect, and diversity
  • ✅ Be alert to signs that a child or family may need extra support
  • ✅ Provide a safe and inclusive environment where children can learn and grow
  • ✅ Work closely with other agencies if we have concerns

What Does This Look Like in Practice?

 In our nursery, we:

  • Encourage children to talk about their feelings and listen to others
  • Celebrate different cultures and traditions
  • Teach children how to play safely and respectfully
  • Support children's understanding of right and wrong in an age-appropriate way

Our staff are trained to recognise early warning signs and know what to do if they’re concerned about a child’s wellbeing.

Why Is This Important?

Children are naturally curious about the world. The Prevent Duty ensures that we guide that curiosity in a way that promotes safety, kindness, and respect for others. By working together, we can help your child grow into a confident, caring individual.

Have Questions?

We understand this may be a sensitive topic. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to speak with our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) or any member of staff.

Together, we can give children the best start in a safe and supportive environment.

Promoting British Values at Little Treasures

At Little Treasures  we help children build strong foundations for life by promoting the fundamental British values:

👫 Democracy – Learning to take turns and make choices
⚖️ Rule of Law – Understanding boundaries and why rules matter
🤝 Individual Liberty – Encouraging independence and confidence
❤️ Mutual Respect & Tolerance – Celebrating different cultures, beliefs, and families

We weave these values into play, stories, and daily routines to help children grow into kind, respectful citizens. 🌈
